About
90mil’s first in-house event Das Zwischen is a celebration of Berlin’s vibrant underground scene. Temporary music spaces are often a space for community, diversity and complete freedom of expression. The visuals for Das Zwischen are an attempt to represent all that awe-inspiring diversity and resilience that 90mil upholds within Berlin's cultural landscape.
The clients’ vision of the Das Zwischen event series was pretty clear from the very first meeting, they wanted to portray a softness for its visual identity, and wanted to incorporate queer joyful imagery while still being a Berlin party poster. They also wanted it to be in my own style of hand illustrations and character design.
After extensive interviews with the client, a brief was created, which was then used to create mind-maps and quick hand-type sketches. This is also the time when I am already experimenting with colors, shapes and effects that I can use for the final product.
After a week of working on different directions, the final sketch that was approved from the client was a layout that created an open space in the middle of the poster that is populated by organic shapes that created the many faces of Berliners.
After planning all the content that is to be included in the poster, I began the final sketch, the process video for it can be seen below.
The only straight lines this poster has are the ones implied by the arrangment of all the content and shape clusters, which to me represents our experience of the city of Berlin. A rigid urbanscape populated by a vibrant organicity. It is also intended for the onlooker to find joy in the characters that the shapes end up creating.
