Poetry Meets (Funk & Dance)
Poetry Meets is a monthly show that has become a houshold name in Berlin for lovers of spoken word, performance art and music. Their concept combines performance with a specific genre of music for every event. For their last event of 2023 they reached out to me for a flyer design that breaks out of their usual typographic and layout heavy aesthetic to something vibrant and funky. The genre of music for the event was Funk and Dance and while I agreed with their intention to move away from their usual visual identity, I also recommended creating a sibling to their previous pieces of visual communication. Poetry meets has been happening for years and designing something too far removed from how they have been communicating till now would not necessarily benefit the brand name.
To me, this project was a great chance to communicate through expressive typography. I took inspiration from vintage Funk record covers, and found a way to introduce that aesthetic into the existing minimalist visual framework of a Poetry Meets flyer. The combination of a chunky Slab serif garnished with highlights and depth and a more angular serif font that creates a brooding poetic whimsy creates a contrast that was intended to capture the viewer’s gaze.
