Amnesty InternationalFri Jul 19 2022
Amnesty International is an international non-governmental organisation focused on human rights, with its headquarters in the United Kingdom. In my opinion as a graphic designer, their current web-design doesn't quite conform to their cause. Let me show you what I mean -

Analyzing Amnesty’s current Web-page
What does not work?
- Design lacks character and cohesiveness.

- Ineffective use of photographs and typography.

- Weak calls to action (like donation or joining campaigns)

- Unnecessary use of vector icons.

- Centre aligned copy adds a sense of dis-alignment and         informality.

- The colour yellow does not communicate human rights         issues or the theme of protest.

What works?
- The bold, condensed typeface for headlines

- Menu Bar / Navigation system

- Horizontal strips layout

Re-design
Colour Sceme

- Fire brick red for volume and visibility

- Black symbolizing the spirit of protest

- White to invoke peace

- Black to be used as accent wherever possible

- White for intermediate and negative spaces

Typography

- Big expressive Headlines and titles

- White on red for accessibility

Images

- Desaturated Images for campaigns

- Use high contrast images wherever possible

- High resolution and expressive images

New Web-page Design

Conclusion

- The re-design aims to give an air of urgency and action to Amnesty International.

- Black and white images and better image selection also enhances the feeling of sincerity to the campaigns.

- Bigger, condensed fonts for titles/headlines and overall more condensed layouts also create pressure and urgency.

Limitations/Short-comings

- The use of Red might be an accessibility issue, although measures have been taken to keep text as legible as possible.

- Black and white images may limit the scope of expression, hence image selection must be done thoughtfully.

- Less negative space in layouts might make content managment a little tricky.
